This jewel orchid of the genus Anoectochilus is grown for its foliage. Its thick, velvety leaves are a green so dark it reads as black, crossed by a fine pink-red vein that runs down the centre of each leaf and branches towards the edges. The contrast is sharp, and it holds all year.
Like other Anoectochilus, it grows at ground level, in the shade of the understorey: low light is enough for it, and light that is too strong damages the foliage. It likes a humid atmosphere, which makes it an excellent candidate for a terrarium. Keep the mix lightly moist, without letting it dry out completely.
Its flowering is modest and no rival to the leaves. The leaves are the reason to grow it.
